Colonial Beach has always put on an impressive display of fireworks for such a small town.
Hundreds of memories have been created over the years of families celebrating America’s Independence Day in this little riverfront town.
Even when neighboring localities canceled fireworks due to economics the town of Colonial Beach has still put on a fireworks display that people enjoy. So much so that whole families will stake out a spot on the beach all day long just to have a good view of the amazing pyrotechnical display.
If you don’t have relatives in CB or don’t want to rent a hotel room or private rental then it is imperative to your watching success, that you get a good parking spot as well as some prime sandy real estate on one of the town’s beaches.
Many a fireworks show has continued despite downpours. I remember hunkering down in a store alcove waiting for the torrential downpours to subside so we could walk the 12 blocks back home to my parent’s house. The really sad part was that my parents actually rented the store we used to seek refuge but I had forgotten to bring the key. We could have easily been high and dry watching the fireworks from the large gallery windows just yards away from the municipal pier.
You either love it or hate it, the crowds that gather on the 4th of July create a bottleneck for visitors trying to leave after the show, so make a plan to occupy yourself while the day’s influx of visitors, leave the little town. Each year the police help navigate the traffic and each year they try to improve on their exit strategy, The main element to a successful exit is patience and kindness for your fellow event-goers.
In Colonial Beach, we set our own pace and it’s not run by the clock, it’s run by tolerance for our fellow man. Everyone is welcome and those who get left behind, become our future residents! So grab your favorite lawn chair, umbrella and flip-flops. It’s gonna be a great show!
