Walking – Biking – Golf Carting

Walking | Biking | Golf Carting

Colonial Beach is great vacation spot for people who want to relax and connect with nature. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the scenery by walking, biking or tooling around in a golf cart.

With two-thirds of the town surrounded by water there is a lot of great walking areas along the Potomac River and Monroe Bay.

Walk along the Potomac River; from North to South you can walk along Riverview Drive in the “Meadows” Subdivision and catch a small glimpse of the River there, however despite its name the view is somewhat blocked by homes nestled between Riverview Drive and the shores of the Potomac River.

A little farther south, Beach Ave in the Classic Shores Subdivision provides a nice view of the River and on most days you can see across to Maryland.

Walk along the boardwalk in the downtown area or you can venture out onto the sand and wade in the cool waters of the Potomac River.

North Beach

On the Southern end of town there is a nice long stretch of Irving Ave along “The Point” which connects two public beaches.

South Beach

As you circle back North along “The Point” you can view the more protected waters of Monroe Bay/Monroe Creek as you stroll along Monroe Bay Ave back northward towards the downtown area.

Colonial Beach is a pedestrian, bike and golf cart friendly town. So these scenic routes can be traveled by all three as well as by car. Or in the summer, you might want to take it all in as a passenger on the towns Trolley which during 2022 became free to ride. Prior to that the cost was only .25 cents.

The Trolley runs from the Potomac Beach on 205 to James Monroe Birthplace and throughout the town to the end of the point along Irving Ave and back into town along Monroe Bay Ave. Check out the map for the direction of travel, stops and schedule.

The bike path begins at 7th street.

The Bike / Golf Cart Path Connects Classic Shores And The Meadows Subdivisions

Bikes are welcome everywhere and there is even a special path, which is also golf cart friendly that is tucked away in the woods to connect the main part of town with the Meadows. Starting at Colonial Ave, travel along Euclid Ave to 7th Street where the paved bike/golf cart path begins. Winding through wooded areas the path leads all the way to the Meadows, exiting at Wakefield Street.

Because every street in Colonial Beach has a low speed limit of 25 mph golf carts are welcome all over town. By law golf carts can not travel along Route 205 but they can cross it. Carts can access the Shopping Center on the other side of 205 at the golf cart crossing at First Street. A small golf cart path runs between McDonalds and the Atlantic Union Bank.
